Why Certifications Matter
Every country requires electronic products to meet local safety, electromagnetic compatibility (EMC), and environmental standards. Without proper certifications, shipments can be held at customs, fined, or rejected. For portable mini printers with Bluetooth and USB connectivity, certification costs typically range from USD 2,000 to 8,000 per model per region.
North America: FCC and UL
FCC (Federal Communications Commission) certification is mandatory for any device with wireless transmission. Portable mini printers with Bluetooth fall under FCC Part 15.247 for intentional radiators. Testing covers radiated and conducted emissions, RF exposure, and frequency stability.
UL (Underwriters Laboratories) certification is not legally required but is demanded by major retailers and distributors. UL 62368-1 covers safety for audio/video and IT equipment. Without UL, many US retailers will not stock the product.
European Union: CE, RoHS, and WEEE
CE marking indicates conformity with EU health, safety, and environmental standards. For thermal printers, the relevant directives are:
- EMC Directive 2014/30/EU
- Radio Equipment Directive (RED) 2014/53/EU for Bluetooth models
- Low Voltage Directive (LVD) 2014/35/EU
RoHS (Restriction of Hazardous Substances) Directive 2011/65/EU limits lead, mercury, cadmium, and other substances. Thermal print heads contain trace amounts of lead in solder joints, so RoHS compliance testing is essential.
WEEE (Waste Electrical and Electronic Equipment) Directive requires manufacturers to register and finance end-of-life recycling. EU importers typically handle WEEE registration locally.
Asia: PSE, VCCI, and CCC
Japan: PSE (Product Safety of Electrical Equipment and Materials) certification for power adapters. VCCI (Voluntary Control Council for Interference) for EMC is technically voluntary but practically required for retail sales.
China: CCC (China Compulsory Certification) is required for power adapters shipped separately. The printer itself may need SRRC (State Radio Regulation) certification for Bluetooth modules.
South Korea: KC (Korea Certification) mark covers both safety and EMC. MSIP (Ministry of Science and ICT) registration is needed for wireless devices.
Oceania: RCM
RCM (Regulatory Compliance Mark) covers both EMC and electrical safety for Australia and New Zealand. Testing to AS/NZS standards is required. C-Tick (the EMC component) is being phased into RCM.
